Stakeholder Mapping and Analysis

A stakeholder is anyone who impacts or can be affected by your activities. Stakeholder mapping is the process of identifying your stakeholders, establishing the level of power and vested interest they have in your project, and prioritizing them. This last step is especially important – it is very rare that all of an organization’s stakeholders want the same thing. More often, they have conflicting goals and needs. From a manager’s perspective, it makes sense to prioritize those groups with the most power to affect your project, those with the greatest needs, and/or the groups with highest interest. A stakeholder map not only helps you better understand who your constituents are, but also guides the development of a targeted communications plan. Communicating transparently and often with your stakeholders builds trust, even when they don’t necessarily agree with your actions.

Benefits of Stakeholder Mapping

Identify your Supporters: Understanding who your allies are can help you build support in other stakeholder groups by increasing your credibility, especially if your supporters are opinion leaders and influencers.

Anticipate Problems and Manage Risk: You can anticipate what the reaction to your project may be, and develop strategies to mitigate or reduce negative responses.

Communicate Appropriately: The communications plan that results from stakeholder mapping helps to ensure that you’re sharing the right messages at the right time. It also reassures your constituents that you’re making an effort to be transparent.
