3 Ways to Increase Job Satisfaction

Find out how to get Clear & Now!

As shown in The Job is More Important that the Pay, an employee’s job satisfaction tends to be affected more by the work itself than by external motivators like pay, advancement opportunities, supervision or coworkers. How do employers make work more motivating to their employees? Experts suggest job redesign through:

  • Job enlargement
  • Job rotation
  • Job enrichment1

Job Enlargement

Job enlargement involves giving employees more tasks to perform and/or giving them a larger variety of things to do within their existing role. The benefits are:

  • Employees learn new skills
  • Employees enjoy greater work flexibility and reduced monotony
  • Employees feel a sense of challenge and choice2

Job Rotation

The benefits of job rotation are similar to job enlargement, but job rotation differs in how those benefits are achieved. Rather than adding more or different tasks, employees rotate between jobs at the same level of the organization. An additional benefit of job rotation is that employees get a broad view of that level of the organization, giving them the knowledge they need to fill leadership roles.3

Job Enrichment

Job enrichment is more vertical than the other two methods. With this method, employees get a holistic view of the organization. The employee is exposed to a wide range of tasks, roles and responsibilities that vary in their difficulty and autonomy. This enhances the employee’s skill set considerably, and engages employees with the whole organization, rather than just a portion of it.4

It’s important to note that job enrichment has been found to increase employee satisfaction more than job enlargement. This is due in part to the perception that job enlargement is just a way for employers to increase the workloads of their employees.5

As with any change in an organization, the most important part of implementing job redesign is to engage in two-way dialogue with employees. This will help employees understand your intentions and avoid misunderstandings.6
